조현택은 도시와 비도시, 과거와 현재, 고도성장과 상대적 빈곤이 교차하는 경계의 풍경 속에서 발견한 기이한 파편들을 사진으로 기록한다. 그는 사라져가는 전통의 흔적과 개발의 주변부로 밀려난 구조물, 믿음과 욕망이 뒤엉킨 풍경을 통해 한국 사회에 내재한 불안정한 욕망과 집단적 감각, 그리고 익숙하지만 쉽게 설명되지 않는 현실의 균열을 드러낸다. 다큐멘터리와 연출적 감각을 넘나드는 그의 작업은 블랙코미디적 아이러니와 그로테스크한 풍경을 통해 동시대 한국 사회의 심리와 문화적 풍경을 탐구한다.
그는 2012년 제9회 광주비엔날레 《라운드테이블》과 2021년 제13회 광주비엔날레 《떠오르는 마음, 맞이하는 영혼》에 참여했으며, 2024년 휴스턴 포토페스트(FotoFest) 주제전, 2025년 미국 포틀랜드 블루스카이 갤러리 개인전을 비롯해 경기도미술관, 국제갤러리 등 국내외 주요 미술관과 기관의 전시에 참여했다.
작품은 국립현대미술관 미술은행과 경기도미술관, 경남도립미술관, 광주시립미술관, 전남도립미술관, 무안군립오승우미술관 등 국내 주요 공공미술 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다.
조현택은 사진을 통해 한국 사회의 주변부에서 생성되고 소멸하는 풍경을 지속적으로 탐구하며, 현실과 신화, 전통과 현대, 믿음과 욕망이 교차하는 지점을 자신만의 독창적인 시선으로 기록하고 있다.

Hyuntaek Cho is a Korean photographer whose work examines the liminal landscapes where urban and rural, past and present, rapid economic growth and relative poverty intersect. Through photographs of fading traditions, structures displaced by development, and landscapes shaped by intertwined beliefs and desires, he reveals the unstable aspirations, collective sensibilities, and subtle fractures embedded in contemporary Korean society. Moving fluidly between documentary observation and constructed imagery, his work explores the psychological and cultural landscape of Korea through a distinctive blend of black humor and the grotesque.
Cho participated in the 9th Gwangju Biennale, Roundtable (2012), and the 13th Gwangju Biennale, Minds Rising, Spirits Tuning (2021). His recent exhibitions include the FotoFest Biennial 2024 in Houston, a solo exhibition at Blue Sky Gallery in Portland (2025), and group exhibitions at the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, Kukje Gallery, and other leading museums and institutions in Korea and abroad.
His works are held in the collections of the Art Bank of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art, the Gyeongnam Art Museum, the Gwangju Museum of Art, the Jeonnam Museum of Art, and the Muan Seungwoo Oh Museum of Art.
Cho continues to investigate the landscapes that emerge and disappear along the margins of Korean society, documenting the intersections of reality and myth, tradition and modernity, belief and desire through his singular photographic vision.
