Sunnyside of Life
After I returned to my hometown from Seoul, I was dismissed from a company due to its financial difficulties, and earned my living with the a few friends in my hometown as a construction site day laborer for several years since 2010. We would say, jokingly, that we should have studied when we were told to study, but at the same time I would wonder whether thirty-year-old lively youths of today were here because they haven’t studied when they were told to. “Sunnyside of Life” begins with the conversation with my friends on the dreams of our childhood. What were the dreams we had? What did we do to reach that dream? Were the things we strived for real dreams? Are we living just to struggle to stay within an already determined route?
While I created the project “Boys, Be Ambitious!” to extract some strength and resolution for the present from my past, in “Sunnyside of Life,” I wanted to depict myself, despite such process of regained strength, in a more oppressive reality as I grew older. All of us had some form of dream, and maybe that dream was a basic desire. I had thought that the things we hoped for were eventually a human’s instinct of desire. Yet, we are now molded to give up our right to dream and live the life we have. We live with a castrated dream, glancing at the people around us, and striving to be at least better than those at the bottom of the pyramid. Aren’t we happy when we reach that middle caste, content and relived? I wanted to talk about a man tailored to the systemized social structure as he grew older. No one coerced him nor dragged him. He made the choice for himself. Yet, at some point in his life, he found himself in a huge conveyor belt. “Sunnyside of Life” is about us who are so tamed to follow our dreams and ideals, and us who struggle to make one step further in that miserable world where we have to live as a component in a social structure. Ultimately, “Sunnyside of Life” is the story of me.
