소년이여! 야망을 가져라 / Boys, be ambitious!

 Boys! Be Ambitious

어느 날 우연한 기회로 내 앨범을 보게되었다. 거기에는 아주 어릴적 부터 초등학교를 다니던 시절 그리고 중고등학교를 지나 대학생활과 군생활 할 때의 사진등등 내가 살아온 시간들이 고스란히 기록 되어 있었다. 사진들을 찬찬히 보다가 중학교 시절 친구들과 태평사라는 절에 자전거를 타고 놀러가서 찍은 기념 사진을 보게 되었다. 6명의 친구들이 각자의 자전거에 올라 대열을 맞추고 찍은 사진을 본 순간 내 머릿 속에 불현듯 스쳐 지나가는 이미지가 있었다. 그것은 여러 매체를 통해서 한번쯤은 보았던 할리 데이비슨 동호회의 기념 사진 이었다. 그 당시 특별히 의도하지 않고 그냥 찍었던 우리 사진에서 할리 동호회 사진과 비슷한 분위기가 나온 것은 왜일까. 단순히 우연의 일치일까 아니면 다른 이유가 있을까 하며 고민을 하던 중 나는 또 한장의 사진을 보게 되었다. 그것은 뒷산에서 친구와 어깨동무를 하며 찍은 중학생때 사진이었다. 지금보다 더 원숙미가 느껴지는 분위기에 비장미 넘치는 표정과 우리 훌륭한 사람이 되자 하는듯한 눈빛에서 나는 두 마리의 수컷을 보았다. 이날 이후 당시 어린 나이였던 나와 내 친구를 그렇게 만들 었던건 무었 이었을까 하는 고민을 하게 되었다. 풀리지 않는 의문에 이런저런 생각을 하던 중 어릴적부터 지금까지 살아오면서 무수히 보고 학습 되어온 남자들의 모습이 우리가 살아 가는 동안 개개인의 행동 패턴들을 지배하고 있는 것은 아닐까 하는 생각을 하게 되었고, 그것이 가부장적인 대한민국에서는 더욱 크게 영향을 끼칠수 있다는 생각을 하게 되었다.

 내 사진은 여기서 시작하고 있다. 어른들에 대한 환상이 가장 큰 중학생 시기를 배경으로 무서울 것 없는 완전 수컷들의 이야기를 하고 싶었다. 감수성이 넘치면서도 자기들끼리의 소속감을 중시하고 그러면서도 왜곡된 사고를 하던 그 당시의 수컷다움이 물씬 풍기는 나 그리고 대한민국의 남자들의 이야기를 하려 한다.

One day by chance, I had an opportunity to look at my photo albums. The album included pictures from the early childhood, elementary school, middle school, high school, university, and military service, recording my entire life just as it was. There I recognized a picture taken with my friends in middle school days when we had a bicycle trip to Taepyung temple. The picture of six of us posing on the bicycles in a line suddenly reminded me of an image—the picture of Harley-Davidson club we had seen at least once from mass media. I also saw the photo of my friend and me taken in the mountain in my middle school days, arms around each other’s shoulder. In the picture, I saw the maturity greater than now, a resolute expression, and a look of determination that seemed to say “we shall grow up to be a great man.” Here, I saw two males. Was it merely a coincidence that our picture taken without any intention resembled the picture of a Harley-Davidson club picture? What changed my friends and me, who were young at the time? Since that day that I peeked into my album, I always had such questions. With those questions, I went out to seek for the friend in that photo, and that was the beginning of the project Boys Be Ambitious.
