Artist Statement
I was thrown into Beijing without being able to speak a word of the language or understand what others were saying. Since even using public transportation alone was practically impossible, I needed a way to get around and bought a second-hand electric scooter. Some days I wandered through the villages surrounding my studio; on others, I crossed the river into newly developed districts. There were even days when I spent six hours riding round trip into central Beijing.
The land was vast, the city dazzling, and development moved forward with astonishing speed and efficiency. The transformation of the city often seemed to outpace the lives of the people living within it. One day, while visiting a village being demolished for redevelopment, I saw a man drawing water from a pipe that had not yet been disconnected, standing among the remains of his neighborhood. At that moment, I saw both him and myself as if we were standing in the middle of a desert—each like a lone camel confronting an immense landscape.
Leaning on the blueprints promised by the city, I found myself imagining China while living for a short time in a small town in the country's northwest. Yet what I was imagining was perhaps only my own fantasy. Guided by mirages shaped by our individual desires, both they and I continue walking through lives that, at most, last little more than a hundred years. What is it that we are moving toward?
This work is a record of empty houses that have become part of the landscape and of ruins that have turned into objects. It is also a portrait of ourselves, living and breathing within contemporary China and the broader world of modern civilization.
While working on my previous series about abandoned houses, I once loaded a broken wall into my car after the house I had photographed was demolished. I think I was searching for a way to remember not only the image of a place, but also its atmosphere—something that could not be fully conveyed through photography alone. I constantly ask myself what photography can do. Perhaps I am always searching for ways to express what photographs alone cannot fully contain.
The word “panorama” refers to a broad view or landscape.
I titled this work Another Panorama.
