‘Boys, Be Ambitious’
The note of Boys, be ambitious from Hyuntack Cho.
One day, I had a look at my albums by chance. In the albums, there were pictures of my childhood, elementary school, middle school, high school, university, military service and so on, which were the recordings of my life time just as it was. When I looked at those pictures slowly, I saw a picture taken with friends in my middle school days at Taepyung temple where we went by bicycles. The picture of 6 getting on each bicycle suddenly reminded me an image. That was a souvenir picture of Harley-Davison club which could be seen from many media at least once. …skip… Having many doubts, I went out to seek for the friend in that photo. That was the beginning of Boys Be Ambitious.
-from the author’s note-
1. ‘Boys, be ambitious’ from Hyuntack Cho begins with the photo albums which the photographer had a look by chance. From time to time, photo albums remind the memory of forgotten past, people, and places. The writing of Roland Barthes1) starting with “One day in the evening…” also depicts his feelings putting the photos of his deceased mother in order. Just like that Barthes expressed ‘meet again’ his mother through the pictures in the writing, Hyuntack Cho also came across with himself of childhood through his old photos.
In fact, the help that old photos give is normally ‘it existed’ and the existence might sometimes offer rather a pain. But for this photographer it becomes a motive to gather scatters into one without exposing this pain.
He said that he had felt “two males who looked even more mature than now with heroic faces and eyes filled with desire to be decent people”from the photo of himself at middle school days. And he said, “I got a question what made me and my friend at young age look like that.”He confessed that this question connected to “derision about juveniles in which he unconsciously imitated ‘manly deed’ followed in Korea society without doubt. Nevertheless, Hyuntack Cho puts more focus on pleasant reconstruction than sarcasm. And dreaming of refined speaking out of rough ridicule, he wanted to finish this story, which had started to remind his memory of childhood.
2. Hyuntack Cho said that before getting into work he had worried he should have a societal speech rather than private work as self consolation. However, after much thought, he could find the answer to his dilemma through the most private photo albums which proved his personal history and conversation with friends. Also, the images of ‘Boys, be ambitious’ do not seem like only autobiographical story. Instead those images suggest a scene from a movie about school or growing up. The plot written in the ‘item sketch of photographing’ makes you feel reading a film scenario. What makes enjoyable is that this scenario is ‘something rough, childish, open, funny, rustic and raw’2) handwork.
Naju, Cholla-do which is the hometown of the photographer is the background of his work, and as settings and properties he uses places and materials unfamiliar to metropolitans.
This effort of him came to fruition at model arrangement, who were the juniors of his old school where he visited as a photographing place. Inartificial movements and mischievous looks of the kids infer their enjoying themselves rather then feeling burden of performance. When asked the method, he proudly talked that he could naturally intimate with them by listening their concerns about opposite sex, study, and career as a big brother not as a director. Despite they were the kids arranged for the photograph, Hyuntack Cho tried to be an adviser who could be a friend of them making up for the insufficiency of parents or teachers.
3. In the writing about his juvenile ‘Berliner Kindheit um Neunzehnhundert’, Walter Benjamin said ‘the recollection about childhood should not deal with only personal and private past, and emotional writing about personal past is hard to win the sympathy.’ 3) Therefore Benjamin not only recalled of his childhood but expected to win the sympathy of the German intellectual in exile at that time.4)
Then, of whom the author expected the ‘sympathy’ with ‘Boys, be ambitious’? Without difficulty, we can find the devices provoking the nostalgia for people of the author’s age especially those who spent their childhood in the suburb or country rather than city. <Carp boy> from the remembrance of fishing at the waterside, <a kid planting a tree>, <hunting> and <escape> taken of playing children with the setting of construction site or dug ground at a hill are those examples. Even though those places become off-limits for children these days or less pleasant places than computer rooms or game rooms, they were the playgrounds for those who spent juvenile around the same time with the author. Besides, there are straight expression and bold reconstruction about acquaintance of the opposite sex and sex which are the main concern and cannot get past in childhood.
Like this, ‘boys’ in ‘Boys, be ambitious’ do not indicate ‘boys of nowadays’ who walk asphalt roads back to the apartments from academies late at night and play only computer games as a hobby. Instead, boys Hyuntack Cho wants to recall might be young men of nowadays who were the ‘boys of past time’, who call themselves as looser. Anyway, whoever is the target, an obvious thing is one. The photographer tries to recollect their ‘Ambitious’, and the author himself could be one of them. Furthermore, he does not hide that the ambition of childhood is close to basic and macho ‘ceremony of boys’. A childish sexual desire in <middle school student dreaming love affair with a female university student> or puerile behaviors in <hiding place> or <a head of school> are no more than following desire of adults for worldly things. Nevertheless, we do not think them as mimicking adults’ desire but can feel the innocent juvenile energy through the kids’ eyes and faces. And this expression make the viewer find a gap hidden at the scene, which is not only between the kids’ childish behaviors and naive eyes but also between our present reality and desire during childhood.
When we watch the scenes of ‘Boys, be ambitious’ with distance, we can face our ‘reality’ through objective look, and it can be more than just a look at one photo feeling the nostalgia. Hence, the remembrance and reappearance repeated in ‘Boys, be ambitious’ do not stuff the photographer inside the past but seem to be close to the intention of the author who wants to face himself at present through ‘looking back’.
‘Boy, be ambitious’ is a proverb or a maxim. Even though we do not know what the desires encouraged to boys and girls are. Rather, it is harder to say ‘have the desires’ than ‘do not have them’. Is it because of that? The words Hyuntack Cho throws to us are hard to swallow easily but make us think them over and over. And now, isn’t it right for us to face the reality lying in front of us thinking the dream of past and present over and over?
