Hyuntaek Cho: Can the ontology of photography bring us aesthetic experiences?
Byoungsoo Kim (editor in chief, Korean Journal of Art Criticism)
It is too difficult to say that the situation in the current photography is like this. It is true that the history of photography has been with technology, but that does not explain photography. And now, when discussing photography as contemporary art, it is too much to deal with the short history of photography. Then, what is the photography, so will it become an issue now? This is a question of the ontology of photography. At this point, Hyuntaek Cho's photographic aesthetics are located. His latest work, “Stone Market,” metaphors “our life” through the world of stone objects. It is a metaphor based on research. It shows photographs in a different way from the metaphor, which can be borrowed from the exhibition (Mirrow & Windows: American photography since 1960) planned by John Szarkowski who was the photography director of the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). It is also different from the widespread “Instagram” photo that symbolizes the contemporary era. The purpose of this article is to reveal the identity of the “photo-world” he is taking.
There is a picture that cannot be understood at a glance. That's the case when you come across a world that seems to be all of a sudden or messy. However, it is different from the synthesis that flavors our time. Then the question arises as to where the subject is in it. Basically in the history of photography, even though the subject is diverse, the “machine” that captures it has been fixed. The overlook of this area has constantly reversed the history of photography. It's a ‘machine' that is active on a fixed subject. Rather, this misunderstanding made it possible to question Hyuntaek Cho's photographic ontology. Otherwise, the ontology of a new photograph could not have been born through him. These are the moments where the question continues to take pictures. There is a world made possible through cultural anthropological field research at the basis of some poetic acts. Inquiry, not manipulation or directing, creates a new documentary photograph. However, this part is almost similar to a living archaeological method. (It's a little different, but when asked if he read a lot of books, he said he sees a lot of exhibitions. A kind of archeology of knowledge can be said to be achieved through exhibitions and field investigations.) From camera obscura to Instagram, no chronology of photography can be said that the work of writing the historical ontology of other photographs is Hyuntaek Cho's photographic aesthetics.
A sense of, or understanding, of the text enables flexibility. This is why his sincere screen doesn't look unreasonable or unnatural to understand. It means that the layout or display that already exists in our world “commercially” is not viewed as a simple order or hierarchical, but as a kind of metaphor. This part is fascinating, but does he accept the order, grandiosely, the aesthetics of capitalism (which is outdated in terms of these days, but still a powerful neoliberal method) and accepts the aesthetics of mimesis as it is. Stone objects have a specific symbolism in their existence. It can be said that it is almost kitsch. Raphael's painting "The School of Athens" is a scene in which characters from various schools express their own personality. While the world is reflected by the artist's will, the world of photographs discovered and taken by Hyuntaek Cho is conducted based on archaeological and cultural anthropological investigations.
And I remember what he said about 'faith'. That's a serious problem in the world of how relationships and grades can work together. Capitalism does all of this. The scenes covered by Hyuntaek Cho's recent works are aesthetically beautiful, but they can be said to be a world of mutual heresies that can hardly be expressed religiously. However, we must live like this realistically and live with this question unless a special situation arises. Faith is very special in the way it relates to the world and is mutually exclusive from other beliefs. The symbols may overlap and show family similarity. Therefore, disputes sometimes arise, and the scene can be said to be reality. Hyuntaek Cho finds such landscapes all over Korea and captures them with photos. Looking at Taryn Simon's photo of secret places in the United States, I wonder if the artist can accurately explain what it really looks like and the reason behind it, but Hyuntaek Cho's photo seems to have made a virtual reconciliation. It is a visible scene, but there is no denying that it exists somewhere in Korea. And it doesn't require any special explanation. This is because it provides aesthetic pleasure visually.
The fact that the screen was not composed by him makes me more afraid. I and you live like this. At the same time, we want to be safe by order that is set by each other! The photographer who visits all these worlds presents aesthetic beauty, but provides constant political discomfort. It is a kind of political aesthetic. I have never heard from him any direct comments on the political situation in Korea. Nevertheless, I can feel his attitude to cope with our conflicting reality.
His photographic aesthetics seem to portray the context from the history of photography to ontology, through archeology and anthropology to religion and politics. It means to realize the history of photography to prove the existence of photography. His previous series of 『Empty House』 captured the scenery using the house itself as a camera. And this time, the aesthetic experience was actually realized in his own room of GGC. The scenery outside the window is projected onto a cube made of rags and cloths he assembled and installed. Along with the perception of seeing an existing photo, it creates an aesthetic experience that coexists with the photo in the photo. It could also be called a kind of ‘living photo-sculpture'. Also, if you dare to use English expressions, it deserves the name “Live Photo Installation”.
The “Stone Figures” series can also be included in the category of living photo-sculpture. The entire screen is composed by moving the viewpoint slightly from one point. And each of them is transferred to a different plate so that it can take full advantage of flow and deformation. So it can be called a live photo installation. You can think of photography as art and as an area that connects contemporaneity in contemporary art. In What is contemporary art?, Terry Smith said, “In the aftermath of modernity, art has indeed one option: to be contemporary. But ‘being contemporary’ these day means much more than a middle embrace of the present.” If so, what does it mean to exist in the condition of contemporaneity? At first glance, it is grotesque, but the place where they are placed before being sold to a specific place and placed is concrete and realistic. It can be said to be a market and a showcase. The contemporary space where the market and faith, or capital and soul connect, is the photo-screen-world that Hyuntaek Cho found and captured.
Perhaps the dispute is the most contemporary. This is the point where there is room for contention in the law. The area that exists realistically beyond right and wrong is a conflict area. There are actually so many in the world! Contemporary art seems to prefer conflicting thinking as a method of world production. So this world seems to be a mixture of 'metaphysical and political' and 'political and metaphysical'. However, we are increasingly tired of such a worldview, and these days, we miss a stable and safe landscape. Even if it is different, it may be a luxury as an ideal that the comfort that can be trusted has not yet arrived, but maybe that is faith. The desire to live without the need to create another world would be the meaning of faith. Hyuntaek Cho's screen aesthetically embodies such beauty. While ideally exploring the world of beauty that has been forgotten or replaced in the art of our time, he takes a method of photographing the scene of the conflict realistically. So his photographic aesthetics can be called a kind of new metaphysics.
