Things I Remember
Memory is the phenomenon by which experiences and sensations are stored in some form and later reappear through recollection or reconstruction.
Everyone remembers the passage of time. We often find ourselves reflecting on past events and memories, sometimes immersed in nostalgia, and at other times overcome by a quiet sense of sadness.
In Christopher Nolan's film Memento (2000), the protagonist suffers from short-term memory loss. Traumatized by the rape and murder of his wife, he loses almost all of his memories except for his own identity, the fact of his wife's death, and the name of the man responsible. In order to find the killer, he leaves notes for himself, takes photographs, and even tattoos information onto his body. Following these traces, he attempts to reconstruct the memories he can no longer retain.
His memory is lost because of a medical condition, but I believe that all of us gradually lose our memories as we move through life. There are moments when we cannot recall something that happened only yesterday, or even what occurred just moments ago. Yet there are also memories from long ago that remain vivid and unforgettable.
Among those memories are some that have become deeply embedded within us. They suddenly return in the midst of everyday life, overlapping the present with the past. A particular landscape, a familiar scent, or an unexpected encounter can bring them back with startling clarity. I wanted to gather these fragments of memory and piece them together.
I remember, therefore I exist.
Like the protagonist of Memento, who records and assembles traces of memory in order to find the man who killed his wife, I wanted to create a body of work that searches for my past self in order to understand who I am today.
Perhaps this work is a process of restoring forgotten memories—a journey of tracing my own existence by reconnecting scattered fragments of time.
